2014 flew by in the blink of an eye. From multiple retail openings and major awards to the groundbreaking on a new YMCA and a successful Indy Do Day, this year was nothing short of amazing. February 25 | Opening: Art + Supply
A year after the hotel’s grand opening in January of 2013, The Alexander’s store, Art + Supply, officially began business. Inside you’ll find art-themed coffee table books, local eats from Sun King, Just Pop In, and the City Market, journals, playing cards, and scarves inspired by Jorge Pardo’s vibrantly decorated bar space.
May 23 | Certification: LEED Silver
The Alexander became the first (and only) hotel in Indianapolis to achieve a LEED silver certification in the category of new construction & major renovation. Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, LEED is the primary program for the design, construction and operation of green buildings.
June 16 | Finalist: ULI Global Awards for Excellence
CityWay was announced as one of 23 global finalists in the Urban Land Institute's Global Awards for Excellence competition, widely recognized as the land use industry’s most prestigious recognition program.
July 10 | Winner: PARAGON Award
In the category of “builders, owners, and developers,” CityWay was awarded the 2014 PARAGON award from the National Apartment Association for “Best Community, Green Housing.” The annual awards program recognizes the multifamily housing industry’s top communities, executives, employees and affiliate programs.
July 15 | Groundbreaking: YMCA
CityWay and the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis broke ground on a new YMCA building, to be completed in late 2015. The facility will feature two indoor swimming pools, three gymnasiums, an elevated running track, a culinary studio, and a green roof for fitness classes.
July 23 | Opening: Yolk
Chicago’s beloved breakfast hot spot Yolk opened at CityWay this July. Breakfast favorites include eggs benedict and red velvet french toast. The owner, Taki Kastanis, is already planning a second downtown Indianapolis location.
July 31 | Opening: Gandolfo’s New York Delicatessen
Gandolfo's New York Delicatessen unlocked its doors this year at 309 S. Delaware St. Founded by native New Yorker Greg Gandolfo, the deli strives to reproduce a New York deli experience for non New Yorkers.
October 2 | Project: Indy Do Day 2014
CityWay teamed up with The Alexander, Big Car Collaborative, Indyhub, and The Stadium Village Business Association to beautify the underpass at Meridian and Ray Street for Indy Do Day 2014.
October 3 | Opening: IMOCA
The Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art opened its second location in Indianapolis in October of 2014. The new 3,000 square foot location was created in partnership with CityWay’s parent Buckingham Companies, which wanted to add a rotating gallery to complement The Alexander's permanent collection of contemporary art.
October 24 | Winner: 2014 Prodigy Award
The Indiana Apartment Association announced its 2014 Prodigy award winners this October, and The Residences at CityWay took home the following two awards: Best Community Online Marketing Program and Best Corporate Suites Program.
December 2 | Announcement: Franciscan St. Francis Health
Franciscan St. Francis Health will open medical offices at CityWay, adjacent to the YMCA complex at 430 S. Alabama St., allowing the two organizations to partner on health and wellness programs.
